Kinney Shores Beach Report      August 15, 2015

By:  Joel Swartz, VP KSA

The summer has been hot and dry with very little rain and therefore no storm damage, only sand tracked by foot traffic covered many sections of the boardwalks.  Over all the boardwalks now look very good and the new sections have replaced 99% of all the walkways.

The work ahead for the remaining part of the season is grass trimming, sea rose trimming and sweeping.   The new state law LD 67 is in effect for No Smoking in public places including beaches.  All city barrels should be at the top of the boardwalk according to Patrick Fox, Director of the Saco DPW.

Cottage:  All composite sections.  Signage is posted and a new No Smoking sign has been added.  The city trash barrel is at the top of the boardwalk. The stairs are in fair condition, the boardwalk has grass growing between slats in some sections and the dune grass is growing over the walk in a few areas.  Just sweeping and trimming of dune grass is needed at this time.  Next spring the walk should be lifted and straightened.

Shore Ave: Good condition just needs light sweeping through the remainder of the season and straightened.  Two boards are broken and need to be replaced. Sea roses were planted along each side of the walkway and a storm fence erected on both sides of the ROW by the Ernst’s at 81 Oceanside.  Doggy Bag station is well stocked. Several visitors to the beach have complained about the narrow access up this boardwalk, two people have reported falling while trying to navigate the narrow path.  The city barrel is on the beach. Signage is missing the no smoking sign. Doggy Bags are well stocked

Palmer:  All New sections and excellent condition.  Several sections should be leveled and the transition from the boardwalk to the beach is very steep now and there is no handrail to assist beach goers.  This section was very slippery because of the sand and slope to the beach.   A light sweeping and grass pulled from between some of the slats is all that is needed.  Signage is missing the no smoking sign.  The city trash barrel is at the top of the boardwalk.

Piney Woods:  New walkway and in excellent condition.   Signage is missing no smoking sign.  Sea roses are trimmed on each side, well swept and Doggy Bags are well stocked.  City trash can is at the top of the boardwalk.

Dune Ave: All new sections and in excellent condition. Signage is missing no smoking sign.  A light sweeping is all that is needed.  The city trash barrel is on the beach.  The stairs leading to the beach are covered with sand.

Outlook:  All new sections and in excellent condition.  Sea Roses could use a light trim.  Doggy bags appear to be well stocked. The city trash can is on the beach.  The last section of boardwalk has been washed out underneath it and is a hazard.  Sand should be pushed up to this section and leveled. The signage is missing the no smoking sign.
